A retail store loses a key manager at the start of the busy season.


On October 13, 2011, just before closing time, Country Toy Shop’s Assistant Manager, Mavis Black, delivered a letter of resignation to store owner, Cole Carr, providing two weeks’ notice of her departure. This caught Cole off guard, as the holiday season was about to commence and every available staff member would be needed to deal with the high volume of activity at that time of year. Black was apologetic, and indicated she had been approached by Country Toy Shop’s main competitor, who was offering her a Manager’s position and a 20% increase in pay above her current CTS salary. Carr paused to ask himself “What to do now?”
